I am a 3rd grade teacher in DCPS.
What did you do previously?
I am originally from Portland, Oregon. I received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications and Spanish from Portland State University, and briefly worked in marketing and advertising before falling in love with teaching. I have been working as an elementary and ESL teacher since 2009. I have taught in Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi, and Washington, DC. I am a licensed K-6 teacher and I obtained my Masters of Education from Concordia University in 2015.
Why do you work in education?
I work in education because, honestly, I could not see myself working in any other field. Teaching is meaningful work and I know that all of the hours I put into my lessons and classroom is time well spent. It is humbling, exhausting, and emotional but it is the job I love.
Why did you decide to join YEP-DC?
I decided to join YEP-DC after attending multiple happy hours and a YEP conference last year. I've met great friends through YEP and I feel it is an organization made up of individuals like myself.
What’s been your favorite YEP-DC experience?
The happy hours!
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In 10 years, I see myself in education policy or administration. I do see myself in the classroom for at least another five years--there is a lot to learn!
